Ann Lewis

Ann Lewis (Wales 1962 ) –Ty yn Coed (The house in the woods), linocut 25 x 8 cm (2010)

This print was commissioned as a birthday present where my brief was a 'portrait' of the cottage where the people lived. The more I thought about the recipient of the gift, the more I felt this print needed to capture not only the cottage but the life of the people who live there, which revolves largely around the livestock they keep. A series of small vignettes felt like the best approach and this triptych was the perfect way of combining several unique images bound within one.

I couldn't get away from placing their wonderful sow Heulog (which in Welsh means ‘Sunny’ as in weather or disposition) centre stage. The perspective of the cottage and the focus of some of the fowl either side leads the eye towards the sow. Each individual block acts as a chapter of the whole story. I purposely designed some elements to overflow the boundaries of each block to act as a visual link between each as well as conveying a sense of movement and character in the animals and birds.
